    T-Parity Violation by Anomalies

    Little Higgs theories often rely on an internal parity ("T-parity'') to suppress non-standard electroweak effects or to provide a dark matter candidate. We show that such a symmetry is generally broken by anomalies, as described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. We study a simple SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3) Little Higgs scheme where we obtain a minimal form for the topological interactions of a single Higgs field. The results apply to more general models, including [SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3)]^4, SU(5)/SO(5), and SU(6)/Sp(6).Comment: 17 page

    A set of preliminary entry guidance and autopilot software formulations is presented for use in the Mission Control Center (MCC) entry processor. These software formulations meet all level B requirements. Revision 2 incorporates the modifications required to functionally simulate optimal TAEM targeting capability (OTT). Implementation of this logic in the MCC must be coordinated with flight software OTT implementation and MCC TAEM guidance OTT. The entry guidance logic is based on the Orbiter avionics entry guidance software.     Comparisons of AEROX computer program predictions of lift and induced drag with flight test data

    The AEROX aerodynamic computer program which provides accurate predictions of induced drag and trim drag for the full angle of attack range and for Mach numbers from 0.4 to 3.0 is described. This capability is demonstrated comparing flight test data and AEROX predictions for 17 different tactical aircraft. Values of minimum (skin friction, pressure, and zero lift wave) drag coefficients and lift coefficient offset due to camber (when required) were input from the flight test data to produce total lift and drag curves. The comparisons of trimmed lift drag polars show excellent agreement between the AEROX predictions and the in flight measurements

    We report here on the preparation and characterization of InAs substrates for in situ deposition of ferromagnetic contacts, a necessary precursor for semiconductor devices based on spin injection. InAs has been grown on InAs(111)A and (100) substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy and then metalized in situ in order to better understand the mechanisms that inhibit spin injection into a semiconductor. Initial x-ray characterization of the samples indicate the presence of nickel arsenides and indium–nickel compounds forming during deposition at temperatures above room temperature. Several temperature ranges have been investigated in order to determine the effect on nickel-arsenide formation. The presence of such compounds at the interface could greatly reduce the spin-injection efficiency and help elucidate previous unsuccessful attempts at measuring spin injection into InAs

    Ba & Eu Abundances in M15 giant stars

    To investigate the Ba and Eu abundances for a sample of 63 giant stars in the globular cluster M15. This is the largest sample of M15 giants stars for which Ba abundances have been determined and, due to the target selection of the original research programme, the Ba abundances are complete along the red giant branch. Stellar parameters were taken from the previous key study and a microturbulence-surface gravity relation was determined for precise measurement of the Ba line at 6496.898 Angstroms, which has a high sensitivity to microturbulence. Element abundances for Ba, La, Eu, Ca, Ni and Fe were calculated using spectrum synthesis and equivalent widths techniques. A bimodal distribution in Ba, Eu and La abundances was found within the sample. The low Ba,Eu,La mode had mean abundances of =-2.41+/-0.16, =-1.80+/-0.08 and =-2.19+/-0.13 while the high Ba,Eu,La mode had mean abundances of =-2.00+/-0.16, =-1.65+/-0.13 and =-1.95+/-0.11. Both modes are indicative of a pollution scenario dominated by the r-process, hence contributions from explosive nucleosynthesis of massive stars. There may be evidence of further enhancement by another heavy element process and of potential anticorrelations in Na-O for both modes indicating a complex formation and evolution history for M15.Comment: 20 pages, 15 figure
